For many years it has been well‐known that the absorption of vitamin C is enhanced by the presence of bioflavonoids. I find it remarkable that vitamin C is found in citrus fruit while bioflavonoids are found in the citrus fruit’s pith. Nature gives us synergistic combinations to help with the absorption and assimilation of many of our vitamins.

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. There are ten essential amino acids that we cannot make in the body but must eat in the diet. Most meat, fish and poultry have these wonderful amino acids in one package. Other foods have some, but not all of them. If there is one amino acid missing, then we call it a ‘limiting’ amino acid. Without that one limiting factor the whole production process comes to a stop. Combining certain foods ensures that all 10 essential amino acids are provided. The resulting combination is called complementary protein, and can be found between grains and nuts, or seeds and legumes with grains. For example, oats and walnuts, rice and lentils, wheat and almonds, and chickpeas and sesame seeds provide complementary protein.

Whenever we try to single out a vitamin or mineral and take it in supplement form, we find years later that the isolated supplement is causing more problems rather than helping our health. Food is complete; combining some foods creates even better absorption and use of nutrients than the isolation of the nutrient. Use food as your medicine for better health and well‐being. Trust in the intelligence of nature and your amazing body.
